Come & Try and Information Session

We host come & try sessions to allow children to experience Nippers before purchasing a membership. It is a great way to meet our instructors, other children and gain a feel for what Nippers is all about. Please note that at least 1 parent/guardian must stay on the beach in close vicinity to your child at all times.

Come & Try Registration:

Step 1: please complete online registration via Eventbrite and bring your printed ticket with you on the day, click here for registration.

Step 2: complete come & try waiver form for each child participating, please bring with on the day or email before attending to: ). Click here to access the waiver.

Location to Meet: Grange Surf Life Saving Club (497 Esplanade, Grange). Meet our Registration Team on the middle floor inside our clubrooms (via Seaview Road access door). Please note that parking can be tricky (please allow an extra 15 minutes to factor this in. Please remember to bring your printed come & try waiver & registration with you.

About Nippers

The Grange Juniors program promotes beach safety and awareness, inclusiveness, fun, confidence, fitness, teamwork and a place where the outdoors is our hidden classroom. It is designed for children from age 5 to 13 years with new members always welcome. Grange is a family and community club with an enjoyable environment providing training and participation in areas starting at basic surf safety to advanced competition. With the support of trained instructors, we implement a program based on Surf Life Saving Australia’s National Surf Education Program. This program is age appropriate and structured to the varying abilities of children by gradually teaching them surf life saving skills as well as developing their ability to compete in the surf sports environment. Grange SLSC is a proud of our long term and proven success in our surf sports program as evidence of our Juniors winning Surf Life Saving State Titles 9 times in the previous 10 years!

Junior activities are aimed at building leadership skills and provides a training ground for tomorrow’s lifesavers who are confident and independent individuals.

Not only will we teach children valuable beach safety skills, we hope to instill a sense of belonging and a place where they will make friends for life. Our club has long standing competitive success however, we are also very inclusive and understand that competing is not for everyone. Whichever your child chooses, we hope they have a fun and memorable experience.

Nipper Season Dates & Times

The junior season generally runs from mid October until mid March. Our first Nipper session for 2018 will be held on Saturday the 13th of October (please see come & try information above to register if new). Session times are 1 hour and 15 minutes for Tiny Tots (U6-U7) and 2 hours and 45 minutes for U8-U13s (both sessions include a pre-session meeting of 15 minutes).

Nipper Ages & Groups

Nippers must be at least 5 years of age to be registered and permitted to participate in the junior program. A child’s age group for the season is their age at midnight on the 30th of September. This is also their competitive age if participating at interclub carnivals and events as well as Junior State Championships. Children must participate in their correct age groups due to set age defined programs by Surf Life Saving SA. Please click here for age groups.

Membership Fees & Registration for New and Renewing Members

Any additional fees are for uniform requirements (see uniforms below).

Sports Voucher Discount: The Government of SA provides an opportunity for primary school aged children (up to Year 7) to receive up to a $50 discount on sports. From the 1st of January 2019, this discount will increase up to $100. If you have not already utilised this discount on other sports within the same calendar year, please follow the below steps:

  • Complete the sport voucher registration via by: clicking here
  • Deduct the appropriate amount (2018 $50 or 2019 $100) within the payment section of our membership registration (SLSA Members Portal)

Please note:- if you have already used this discount on other sports, our Registrars will advise you of this and the discounted amount will be payable to Grange SLSC.

Training Information

The majority of our general training is held each Saturday afternoon located at our club (meet on the beach side of our club rooms). These sessions incorporate several age specific beach and water events to provide the children with the necessary training to develop their beach and surf skills. Children must have a care giver close by during all trainings.

For those wishing to participate in our surf sports program, we provide the following additional trainings and information on these are provided internally to our members:

  • Board
  • Flags (racing for a plastic tube known as a flag. Technique and style is incorporated into these trainings)
  • Iron Person (swim, board and run)
  • March Past (traditional discipline that provides concentration and rhythm)
  • R&R (Rescue and Resuscitation)
  • Sprint
  • Swimming

What to Bring

  • Bathers (wear)
  • Age group skull cap (from U8s and above, this must be purchased from our uniform team)
  • High visibility vest for U8 – U13 (this may be purchased from our uniform team)
  • Wide brimmed hat
  • Long sleeve top
  • Sun screen
  • Goggles
  • 2 x towels
  • Water bottle
  • Warm jumper and track pants

Note:- it can be cold and windy early in the season, bring extra warm clothing to help the children be comfortable and enjoy themselves. Don’t give up though, as it becomes great with the warmer weather!


For training the essential items are a high visibility vest and skull cap. If a child is competing, it is compulsory to wear our club bathers. We have a wide range of additional options for purchase from our Uniform Team available on our top floor inside of our clubrooms (please use life or stairs inside). Our price list is supplied to our members via our internal communications.
